RULES : Echelon Scrabble Ladder
Please contact or befriend your opponent - it is up to YOU ! (Then immediately, start a game each against the other on Scrabble Worldwide/Facebook).

1. a) Players may challenge the player now UP TO 12 positions above on the ladder. Note: when FIRST joining the ladder a challenger may challenge up to 20% of the top of the ladder!

b) If a player challenged (the challengee) doesn't respond in 36 hours (a day and a half) then the challenger may withdraw the challenge without penalty. (Contact administrator for help with this if needed).

2. All games should be played within 19 days (plus 2 days additional grace period) total 21 days - of a challenge being made (unless there are extenuating circumstances with members ill etc). The challenger wins if there is a default of the time period - unless admin. agrees to enter an amended result due to the said circumstances.

3. If a player is going to be unavailable /absent for more than a week or wishes to take a break from the ladder, they must list themselves as being on a 'break' - by going to OPTIONS ...and.... 'TAKE A BREAK' - thereby a code will appear next to their name.

4. Play your game/s regularly as 'one turn a day' games as normal, but not less than that - unless one player notifies the other in advance of eg. non-weekend play or a temporary absence.

a) If a player is overdue on his/her turn, the opponent should first use the option on the game to NUDGE their opponent and if no response is made after another approx. 12 hours, then MESSAGE the player. If there is concern about a delay, contact the Administrator.

b) When both players are online, continual play may proceed.

5. If a successful challenge is made, the losing player will be shuffled down one position, and the winner to the challenged player's original position on the ladder.

6. Two games are played - each player commences one. The winner is determined by whoever wins two games outright.

7a.In the event of a tie - a 3rd 'decider' game may be played with the challenged player commencing. The winner of two games then, is the overall winner. However if a tie re- occurs, the challenge fails.

b. In the event of a tie on ONE of the two games - (ie both players are deemed by Scrabble Worldwide to have won the game), and the other is won outright by one of the players, the winner is that player - winner of the single game, as the result will be 2 games to 1. Another way to put this rule, is that a 3rd game is required only where both players have each won one game outright.

8. If no result has been recorded by two thirds through a challenge period an automated ladder reminder is emailed to both parties.

9. If no result has been recorded by the end of the challenge period a warning is sent to record the result within a few days 'grace period'.

10. If no result has been recorded by the end of the grace period - (an extra 2 days - giving 21 days total), the challenger automatically wins.

11. If the challenger wishes to cancel the challenge they may do so within the challenge and 'grace' period with no consequences.

12. Conversely, if If the challenged player is unable to complete games for a challenge, they may request the challenge be cancelled (then as above the challenger may cancel the challenge with no consequences). If there is clarification needed, contact the administrator.

13. If a player is challenged (the challengee) and cannot accept it due to taking an imminent 'break' from the ladder, they may inform the admin. of the ladder AND the challenger of this without disadvantage or loss of their position on the ladder.

13. If a player challenges another player they must be ready to immediately contact/befriend the other player and enter play (see rule 3). Otherwise they monopolise the challenged player who cannot cancel the challenge (only forfeit). There is a set time allowance for challenges and to delay clearly disadvantages the challenged player. Any such an incidents should be referred to the administrator.

14. No re-challenges can occur from either player within a 14 day period ie. from first entry of the results (of first set of games) on the ladder by one of the party.

15. The onus is upon the challenger to immediately seek 'befriend' and contact the opponent and commence a game. There is only a set time allowance for the challenge and to delay clearly disadvantages the challenged player.

The Basics
If you have never played in a ladder system before, it's a great way for new players to get started. Here are the basics... No matter where you start on the ladder, after a period of time you will end up playing games with people of similar ability. If you IMPROVE, you are likely to go up the ladder but you will then be playing against harder opponents. If you wish to take a break from the ladder (e.g. you are away for any periods exceeding 7 days) then you can do so by clicking on 'take a break' from the admin page (you need to be logged in to access this page). When you are ready to make a challenge, go to the rankings page (you must be LOGGED IN first). Then click on the player you wish to challenge and follow the instructions. In order to play your match you must be a member of the Echelon scrabble club. The ladder rules are on another link (go back).

New rating system
You will have noticed a points score appear next to player names on the rankings page (if logged in). This is a trial points rating system based on the classic Elo system. Players will be awarded points for winning and lose points for losing depending on how difficult the system calculates your opponent to be. It will take a few games to settle down the scoring system. Currently the rating is displayed for information purposes only but in future it will be possible to arrange the ladder ranking system around this points score.
